Detroit Mayor Charged With Perjury

By AP from nytimes.com on the Web, March 24, 2008

DETROIT -- The Wayne County prosecutor said Monday she is bringing perjury and other charges against Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former top aide.

The prosecutor, Kym Worthy, said Kilpatrick and one-time Chief of Staff Christine Beatty lied under oath during a whistle-blowers' trial last summer when they denied having a romantic relationship.

A perjury conviction could bring up to 15 years' imprisonment and force Kilpatrick to relinquish the mayor's office.
