ROME: Tens of thousands of
gays and rights activists have marched in the streets of Rome and Milan in
colorful "Gay Pride" parades.
The demonstrators, some carrying rainbow flags and flamboyant costumes, others
singing and dancing, have criticized the Vatican for its opposition to same
sex-unions. Activists at the march Saturday held up anti-Vatican banners.
The demonstrators also attacked the conservative government of Premier Silvio
Berlusconi after the minister of equal opportunities refused to back pro-gay
rights demonstrations.
Mara Carfagna caused a stir last month when she said that the "Gay Pride"
marches were pointless as gays no longer suffer discrimination.
