COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST

 

The ACLU of New Jersey (ACLU-NJ) is a nonprofit membership organization devoted to promoting and defending civil rights and civil liberties, with nearly 14,000 members across the state supporting our legal, legislative and public education programs. The ACLU-NJ has fourteen staff members assisted by numerous volunteers in a fast-paced and friendly office located in Newark.

The Communications Specialist oversees most written communications and media relations, working cooperatively with staff and lay leaders to develop public education strategies that enhance the public's understanding and appreciation of constitutional rights and the principles of freedom, justice and equality. The Communications Specialist is responsible to:

  • Manage media relations, including maintaining media contacts database, preparing press releases and news conferences,  developing media strategies and pitching stories

  • Track ACLU-NJ media interviews and appearances, establish and maintain an easily accessible archive of press coverage, prepare press clipping compilations

  • Respond to press calls; researching ACLU positions, developing talking points or quotes, and working with Executive Director to determine the best spokesperson and message

  • Develop and update content for the ACLU-NJ website and oversee contributions of content to external websites

  • Develop and produce ACLU-NJ publications including pamphlets, brochures, event promotions and other materials

  • Oversee production of our quarterly newsletter, Civil Liberties Reporter, working collaboratively with staff and lay leaders

  • Produce and coordinate scheduling of occasional advertising for media and event programs

Qualifications

  • Excellent writing, speaking and analytic skills

  • A strong understanding of civil liberties issues, and the ability to explain ACLU positions to the interested public

  • Experience in public relations, journalism, civil liberties law, or a related field requiring significant writing and public relations duties

  • Proven skills in the development and production of publications

  • Ability to work successfully in a collaborative setting, working with both volunteers and public relations consultants to advance ACLU issues

  • Ability to manage numerous concurrent projects and work under tight deadlines

  • Some overtime and some traveling within New Jersey may be required.

RECEPTIONIST AND ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

The Receptionist and Administrative Assistant provides front-desk reception and assists with administrative needs of the office. Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • Answer incoming phone calls, greet the public, respond to general inquiries, transfer calls and take messages.

  • Fulfill requests for information about the ACLU and its programs in response to inquiries by mail, phone and e-mail. Assist staff and volunteers with preparation of materials to take to speaking engagements.

  • Process daily incoming and outgoing mail, including express documents and packages.

  • Assist with the preparations for ACLU-NJ events.

  • Organize and maintain inventory of the storage room containing ACLU materials to ensure materials are available when needed.

  • Set-up the office for meetings including making coffee or securing food for participants, and after-meeting clean-up.

  • Keep the conference room and kitchen area clean and orderly.

  • Provide general administrative support to staff members and help facilitate the smooth running of the office.

Qualifications

  • Experience in office reception and administrative tasks.

  • Excellent phone manners.

  • Strong verbal communication skills.

  • Comfortable with various office equipment, copy machine, computers, the Internet, and proficient in Microsoft programs including Work, Excel and Access.

  • Detail oriented.

  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment.

  • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU

  • Spanish-speaking a plus.

RACIAL JUSTICE PROGRAM ATTORNEY

 

The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey seeks applicants for a full-time position of Racial Justice Program Attorney. The Racial Justice Program Attorney works under the supervision of the Legal Director to litigate and oversee cases involving racial justice issues, including in the areas of voting rights, education, police practices, discrimination in the criminal justice system and prison and jail conditions.

Job Description

The Racial Justice Program Attorney is responsible for developing strategies and litigating race discrimination cases, including legal research, drafting pleadings and briefs, discovery and motion practice, and trials and appeals in both state and federal courts. The Racial Justice Program Attorney will be responsible for conducting litigation, working closely with and supervising volunteer attorneys who serve as cooperating attorneys in the Program's litigation, and will often serve as co-counsel with other public interest attorneys.

Duties also include non-litigation advocacy, including community outreach, coalition-building, writing and publication of reports, public speaking and media interviews. The Racial Justice Program Attorney will also participate in coalition and public education efforts in conjunction with ACLU organizing and communications staff.

The Racial Justice Program Attorney will be responsible for identifying legal rights strategies in the areas of:

  • Criminal Justice (address discriminatory imposition of criminal justice sanctions based on race and/or economic factors)

  • Prisons & Jails (address inhumane condition in prisons and jails)

  • Discriminatory Police Practices and Racial Profiling (advocate for data collection to be used to push for meaningful police accountability and oversight)

  • Voting Rights (address laws and practices that disproportionately keep non-whites from the polls)

  • Immigrant Rights: (address issues relating to ethnic profiling, detention, local law enforcement of immigration laws)

  • Education (address issues involving disparate treatment of poor and non-whites in public schools, vouchers)

The Racial Justice Program Attorney will also help expand the base of supporters of the ACLU Racial Justice Program by working with the Development staff to initiate and implement special events and to build the project's base of supporters. The Racial Justice Program Attorney will also be responsible for additional duties relating to the work of the ACLU as may be required by the Legal and Executive Directors. The Racial Justice Program Attorney reports directly to the Legal Director.

Qualifications

  • Two years related litigation experience

  • Strong understanding of and commitment to civil liberties and racial justice

  • Excellent organizational skills

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to motivate and interact effectively with people from different racial, social and economic backgrounds

  • Experience with volunteer-based programs and managing volunteers

  • Self-motivated, reliable, and skilled at working as part of a team

  • Public speaking skills and experience desirable
