Retiring High Court Judge Justice Michael Kirby says his homosexuality has challenged the thinking of some of his more conservative colleagues.

Speaking to the ABC's Sunday Profile program, the openly-gay judge would not be drawn on whether fellow members of the High Court bench found it difficult to accept his sexuality.

But he said that over the years some of his colleagues had been less tolerant than others.

"I understand it and I understand where it comes from," he said.

"Often it has to be said it comes from religion.  It comes from religious upbringing, reinforced even to this day by religious instruction -- and it has to be said, religious instruction by the two archbishops of Sydney."
