Gay, lesbian couples to be blessed

VICTORIA -- Rev. Antonio Osorio is inviting lesbian and gay couples to be blessed at St. Saviour's Anglican Church on Sunday.

"They need to know they are not second-class Christians," said Osorio.

The blessing, which will take place at the 10 a.m. mass, is not a marriage ceremony.  It is a blessing of an individual relationship because they are already blessed by God, he said.

Last weekend, the Anglican Church of Canada narrowly voted not to allow its priests to bless same-sex partnerships.  A majority of 300 Anglican lay people and priests agreed to approve same-sex blessing ceremonies at the church's national meeting in Winnipeg, but the resolution was voted down by a narrow majority (21-19) of bishops.
