April 10 Cover StoryWHO’S GAYER?
Letter to Advocate.com from the Web, April 25, 2007
The question raised on the cover of
your April 10 issue was, "But what do Barack and Hillary *really* think of us?"
The answer was all too clear in the uproar surrounding General Peter Pace's
comment that homosexuality was immoral. Neither Senator Obama nor Senator
Clinton, when first asked if they agreed with General Pace's statement, was able
to come up with a clear repudiation of his remark. The first politician to
do that was Republican Senator John Warner of Virginia; the first candidate to
do it was Democrat John Edwards. If either Obama or Clinton thought of us
as anything but a "safe" voting bloc, it wouldn't have taken them several days
after the fact to come up with a response refuting General Pace. There are
two lessons we can learn from this episode: First, not every Republican
can automatically be considered anti-gay. Second, if we're serious about
fielding a Democratic candidate to take the White House in 2008, we need to stop
looking at the "first woman/first African-American" sideshow and start looking
at *all* candidates' policies -- and their actions, which still speak louder
than words.
