WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- Gay and
lesbian library resources at the College of William and Mary will continue to
grow thanks to an alumni group's campaign.
The William and Mary Gay and Lesbian alumni group is known as GALA.
GALA announced this week it has raised enough money to increase the Earl Gregg
Swem Library's endowment fund to 100-thousand dollars.
The fund is named after Richard Cornish, a British sea captain who was hanged in
Jamestown in 1624.
GALA says Cornish was the first person executed in British North America for
homosexuality.
The fund was established with 25-thousand dollars in 1993 and increased to
50-thousand dollars.
Over the years, the endowment has been used to finance acquisition of what the
college's dean of libraries calls "a strong academic collection in gay and
lesbian studies."
