White Plains: Same-Sex Marriages Recognized

By AP from the NYTimes on the Web, June 9, 2006

County Executive Andrew J. Spano has issued an executive order that makes Westchester the first county in the state to recognize gay marriages.  Mr. Spano read the order at a meeting of gay groups on Wednesday night, and received a standing ovation.  The order gives married gay couples the same county privileges as heterosexual couples, like the right to buy family passes to county parks and the right to seek emergency housing as a family.  The order does not require towns and villages within the county to recognize the marriages.  New York City and several other municipalities in the state already recognize gay marriages.
