New York City, Aug. 21 --
Seven New Jersey lesbians are charged with attempted murder and gang assault
after a man was stabbed when he was rebuffed after coming on to one of them on a
New York City street.
The 28 year old man, identified as Dwayne Buckle, is listed in serious condition
in St. Vincent's hospital. Police say that the women had just exited a
movie theater in the West Village when he approached one of them to say she was
pretty.
The 4' 11" woman rebuffed the advance and Buckle allegedly spat at her and made
a homophobic remark. The woman is then reported to have pulled a steak
knife and stabbed him.
The six other women allegedly proceeded to punch, kick and beat him with belts.
The suspects were arrested a block away. The New York Daily News quotes
one of the accused as saying, "He spat on us and threw a cigarette."
A second suspect told the paper that they should not have been charged because
they were defending themselves from "a hate crime."
Garden State gays frequently go to New York to party on the weekends. In
2003 a lesbian teen returning home from a weekend of partying in the city was
stabbed in a homophobic attack as she waited for a bus.
Sakia Gunn, 15, and her 17 year old girlfriend had taken the train from
Manhattan to Newark's Penn Station after spending the night in Greenwich
Village. They were waiting for a bus at the city's busiest intersection
when Richard McCullough and another man drove up around 3:30 a.m. and attempted
to proposition them.
The teens said they weren't interested because they were lesbians. The men
then began taunting them and when a scuffle broke out Shakia Gunn was stabbed in
the chest.
McCullough is serving a prison term for manslaughter, aggravated assault and
bias intimidation.
