EX-STUDENT SUES SCHOOL OVER ABUSE
By AP from the NYTimes on the Web, September 8, 2005
HOLMDEL, NJ -- A former student at Holmdel High School filed a lawsuit yesterday claiming that school officials had failed to protect her from harassment and abuse other students inflicted because she is a lesbian. Nancy Wadington, now 18, said she was forced to leave the school in her junior year because of persistent abuse. The lawsuit, filed in State Superior Court in Monmouth County, claims that the district violated the state's Law Against Discrimination. Ms. Wadington is represented by Lamda Legal, a gay rights group. Maureen Flaherty, the school superintendent, said the district had a policy against harassment and bullying, and she promised an internal investigation.
