Pride event is not your ordinary night out

Asbury Park, NJ June 5 -- Pop
singer Amber will headline the 14th annual Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered
and Intersexed Pride Celebration, presented by Jersey Pride and scheduled to
take place in Asbury Park from noon to 7 p.m. Sunday.
The event, held at Fifth and Ocean avenues, is sponsored by Bank of America and
is considered the state's major event celebrating pride for lesbians, gay men,
bisexual, transgendered and intersexed people. The day includes
performances, a parade and exhibits featuring community information and arts and
crafts.
While the main event does not occur until Sunday, related festivities are taking
place all weekend throughout the city. The Wonder Bar is one of several
establishments participating.
Wonder Bar owner Debbie DeLisa said this will be the third year the bar will be
taking part in the event since its reopening at 1213 Ocean Ave.
Tonight's entertainment features Melissa Ferrick and opening act Terry Little &
Juice, with a $15 cover.
On Sunday, there will be a "Gay Pride Parade Party" from noon to midnight, with
free admission and a performance by Terry Little & Juice at 7 p.m.
"It's a great weekend," said DeLisa. "Everybody has a great, great time."
Other participating venues include Club Paradise and the Circuit, a new gay club
at 915 Kingsley St. (formerly Zippers), which will have its official grand
opening in July.
The Pride Celebration also will include the state's largest outdoor display of
the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt.
Amber's hits include "This Is Your Night," "Sexual (Li Da Di)" and "If You Could
Read My Mind."
Other scheduled performers include Gioia (formerly of Expose), Jade Starling of
Pretty Poison, disappear fear, Josh Zuckerman, Androgene, Namoli Brennet,
Virago, Kate Sawicki and Lez Zeppelin — billed as the world's first and only
all-girl Led Zeppelin tribute band.
Emceeing the event will be comedian Jade Esteban Estrada.
The Pride parade kicks off at noon and will include floats, cars, motorcycles
and marchers.
