AUGUSTA, Maine -- Chief elections officer Matthew Dunlap this afternoon announced that opponents of the law have turned in more than enough valid voters' signatures to force the so-called people's veto referendum.

As passed by the Legislature, the law would protect people from discrimination in employment, housing, education, public accommodations and credit based on their sexual orientation.

Tim Russell of the Christian Civic League of Maine says the successful petition drive, in which more than 56,000 signatures were certified, shows that Maine people care about the institution of marriage.  He says the issue going before voters is really about same-sex marriage.

A message left with the group opposing the people's veto campaign, Maine Won't Discriminate, was not immediately returned.
