Trenton, NJ -- Former altar
boy James McGreevey hasn't been seen much around his parish church since he
declared last year "I am a gay American".
Instead, he has become a frequent worshiper at the Episcopal Church of the Holy
Comforter in Rahway, New Jersey, and St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church in
Manhattan.
McGreevey, who stepped down as New Jersey governor after admitting to an
extra-marital affair with another man, won't say if he has formally split from
Catholicism but acknowledges that he has struggled with the Church for a number
of years.
This week McGreevey was a guest of honor at a fundraiser for a gay Episcopal
group -- Claiming the Blessing -- in Hackensack. Sharing the honors was
Broadway star Matthew Broderick.
"I'm just here to support a good cause tonight," the former governor said.
He was invited to the fundraiser by Louie Crew the founder of Integrity, the
LGBT Episcopal. Crew, who lives in East Orange said the invitation of
extended when he learned McGreevey wanted to become more involved in the gay
community.
About 20 people paid $500 apiece to attend the event at the mansion of lawyer
Matthew Piermatti.
