SMYRNA, Tenn. -- Members of an
anti-gay church have enraged mourners by demonstrating over the weekend outside
the funerals of two Tennessee soldiers who were killed in Iraq.
The Rev. Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan.,
contends that God is striking down U.S. soldiers because America harbors gays
and lesbians.
Members of his unaffiliated church carried signs outside the soldiers' funerals
in Smyrna and Ashland City Saturday, shouting that God hates gays.
Angry townspeople responded by chasing the Westboro members' cars down a
highway, waving flags and screaming "God bless America!"
