CHICAGO -- Home Depot said Thursday that health insurance will be available to employees' same-sex domestic partners beginning next year.

The country's largest do-it-yourself retailer said eligible employees can start signing up their partners next month.

The Atlanta-based company, which has been criticized since June for insuring employees' pets but not their same-sex domestic partners, added that the benefits revision had been in the works for about a year.

Spokesman Jerry Shields said the policy does not extend to opposite-sex domestic partners and that Home Depot "will concentrate on the announcement at hand."

Various companies refuse coverage for opposite-sex couples on the premise that they're legally allowed to marry in all states.
