State Makes Case Against Allowing Gay Foster Parents

LITTLE ROCK, AR -- Lawyers for the ACLU challenged a state witness in a trial over a ban on gay foster parents, saying the psychologist testified about his personal religious beliefs rather than science.
George Rekers testified that children are better off in traditional homes.
Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union attacked Rekers' credibility. Attorney Leslie Cooper noted on cross examination that the University of South Carolina professor is an ordained Southern Baptist minister who has written extensively on Christian parenting. His books include the titles "Shaping Your Child's Sexual Identity" and "Growing Up Straight."
Rekers also acknowledged under questioning that he believes the Bible is the infallible word of God, that he believes homosexuality is sin and that he believes God views homosexuality as sin.
The ACLU sought the non-jury trial in an effort to overturn a state ban on homosexual foster parents. The organization says only one other state, Nebraska, has such a ban.
