Amy Vasquez

Receives NOW Endorsement

From Amy Vasquez for Congress, October 15, 2005

Amy Vasquez, the Democratic candidate for Congress from New Jersey's 4th District, along with Congressmen Rush Holt and Frank Pallone, has received the endorsement of the National Organization for Women's National PAC.  NOW is the largest organization in the nation advocating for equality for all women, the elimination of discrimination in the workplace, school setting and justice system, ending violence against women, and securing women's reproductive rights.

"I am honored to have received NOW's endorsement as NOW is a force in the struggle for women's equality.  Despite strides women have made, a full-time working woman only earns $.73 to the dollar a man earns.  African American women earn $.65 to the dollar and Hispanic women earn $.53.  Economic equality is still an issue.

This election is critical to the status of women's reproductive rights.  The next Congress and President of the United States will decide on as many as three U.S. Supreme Court justices.  I will support nominees that demonstrate a commitment to protecting a woman's right to choose.

Currently, there are no women included New Jersey's delegation to Congress.  Women offer a different perspective on many issues.  Sadly, women comprise only 14% of Congress.

My opponent, Chris Smith, zealously fights against a women's right to choose.  He is responsible for the Global Gag Rule, a U.S. policy that has ended family planning and HIV/AIDS services for millions of people around the world.  Not only does he oppose a woman's right to choose, but he has authored legislation to ban same sex couples from adopting children overseas.  I am a child advocate attorney who has searched far and wide for safe, loving, permanent homes for children.  To deny children a safe, loving, permanent home because of his extreme views is devastating to children who long for a family.

Mr. Smith claims he is strong on human rights, but his record tells a different story.  The Gag Rule has ended services to millions with disease and in need of treatment.  He has persuaded leaders of Uruguay to forbid a referendum from reaching their people.  We are fighting for democracy in Iraq and at the same time Mr. Smith uses his position to squash freedom to vote.  These are substantial human rights issues.  Mr. Smith's zealous advocacy for his extremist views are dangerous for our world and our nation."

Amy has already received the endorsements of other major pro-choice organizations such as Planned Parenthood, NARAL, and GAYPASG.
