Lesbian Sheriff's Officer Wins Harassment Case

Nearly Three Million Dollars Awarded By Jurors

NEW JERSEY -- Jurors have awarded nearly three (m) million dollars to a former Essex County sheriff's officer who said she was sexually harassed because she's a lesbian.

Karen Caggiano testified she had to use the same bathroom and locker room as male officers in the late 1990s.  She said pictures of naked women were posted on the lockers.

He lawyers said the 43-year-old endured lewdness, including one sheriff's officer who repeatedly exposed himself.

Sheriff Armando Fontoura had no immediate comment on whether the department would appeal.

The trial was held in Union County to avoid conflicts of interest.
