Tri-state Couple Caught In Gay Marriage Controversy A Tri-state couple is now thrust into the national debate over family values and gay rights. The two women married a couple of days ago in San Francisco amid controversy and confusion. Pam and Sandy met 14-years ago, but they made their relationship official two days ago. They're one of thousands of gay and lesbian couples who went to California to tie the knot at San Francisco's city hall. "All through city hall there were same-sex couples getting married on steps, and flowers and boutonnieres and everybody's dressed up," said Pam Wright. Both Pam and her partner Sandy Allen are well aware not everyone is happy for them. They say they got married for two reasons -- because they say they're in love and because they want to stand up for what they believe in. "Even people who aren't sure how they feel about it or know that they don't support it, they're talking about it," said Allen. "If we just stay closeted, that wouldn't do anyone any good. So we're out." Out of the closet, but not out of the woods. The couple picked up their license the morning of March 11 and got married that afternoon. It was only later that they learned a court order halted the city from issuing marriage licenses a half hour before their ceremony. Now, like thousands of other gay couples, their marriage is in legal limbo. Regardless, they say they couldn't be happier. The California State Supreme Court must now decide if same-sex marriages are constitutional. |
