New York City has a higher number of Asian same-sex households than San Francisco or Los Angeles, according to a report released yesterday.

The report, analyzing Census 2000 data, showed that 17,163 same-sex households in the United States were headed by an Asian. They represent 0.5 percent of all Asian households.

In the New York metropolitan area, there were 2,653 Asian same-sex households, making up 15 percent of such households nationwide. Los Angeles had 2,534 Asian same-sex households, followed by San Francisco with 2,366.

The report, believed to be the first of its kind to assess Asian gay and lesbian same-sex households, was released by the Asian American Federation of New York, a Manhattan-based nonprofit umbrella group of Asian-American organizations.

Cao O, executive director of the federation, said the report is significant since it could help policy makers, educators and lawmakers determine how to address the needs of Asian gays and lesbians.

"The perception in the country is that all the gays are white and all Asians are straight," said Glenn Magpantay of the Gay Asian and Pacific Islander Men of NY.

Magpantay, who assisted with preparing the report, said same-sex households have suffered inadequate services because national groups have not seen Asian gays or lesbians as needing help with immigration, language skills and other services.

One of the key surprises in the report was that children were more likely to live in same-sex Asian households than in non-Asian same-sex households.

Among Asian gay and lesbian households nationwide, the largest ethnic group reported being Chinese, making up 22 percent of such households.
