Gay Artwork Stolen From Exhibition

Salt Lake City, UT -- Three photographs that sparked protest by Mormon students last week have disappeared from an exhibition of diversity art at a Salt Lake City college.

The pictures of two Mormon missionaries embracing and kissing were on display at Salt Lake Community College, part of a student-sponsored exhibition tied to Diversity Week.

When the exhibit was first unveiled last week a near riot broke out at the school requiring police to attempt to quiet the crowd that gathered to protest the art. Students opposed to the photos said the pictures were disrespectful of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Gay students said the pictures show a reality in the Church that needs to be brought into the open.

The exhibition was moved to a less public area as a compromise between those who opposed and supported the exhibit.

Police say there was no sign of break-in at the school and doubt the photos will ever be found.

"For someone to take action through a crime to say what they need to say is not the way to go about it," the photographer, Don Farmer, told The Salt Lake Tribune.

"I would never have fathomed that sort of action against art," said Farmer, who is gay.

The photos were selenium-toned gelatin prints on museum-quality archival paper. "They are invaluable," Farmer said

"I guess that my fear is that they are destroyed. Those are the originals," he said.

Farmer said the men in the photographs are returned missionaries who became a couple.

"It's real. It's life. It's something that maybe you haven't experienced, but someone else has," Farmer told the Tribune.  He said he took the pictures to document his feelings about growing up Mormon with homosexual leanings.

The church considers homosexual acts grounds for excommunication.
