UN To Provide Same-Sex Partner Benefits To Non-US Workers by Doug Windsor, 365Gay.com January 29, 2004 New York City.--.The United Nations will recognize the same-sex relationships of employees, but Americans and workers from some other countries will be excluded. An administrative order by Secretary-General Kofi Annan will provide the partners of gay and lesbian employees with health and other benefits, but only if their home country allows it. Countries such as Canada, the members of the European Union and some other states recognize same-sex relationships. Workers from those country would be eligible for the benefits. But, the US, Arab nations and most Latin American countries do not. Under Annan's order the United Nations would request permission from the country of origin of the staff member "to confirm the existence and validity of the domestic partnership contracted by the staff member under the law of that country." Although some states such as California, New Jersey, and Vermont recognize same-sex couples, the UN said it will follow the national policy. Susan Allee, a founding member of GLOBE, the Gay and Lesbian or Bisexual Employees at the United Nations, said her group was "thrilled" at the announcement.
