Black Churches Denounce Gay Marriage

Louisville, KY -- African-American Baptists in Kentucky have adopted a resolution opposing same-sex marriage, declaring that it is not a civil right that can be compared to the struggle for racial equality.
The General Association of Baptists in Kentucky, which has more than 500 churches, unanimously approved the measure.
The resolution calls on church members to support a ballot measure this fall that would amend the Kentucky Constitution to restrict marriage to the union of one man and one woman.
"We are offended with those who would attempt to categorize same-sex homosexual relationships and lifestyles with the Civil Rights Movement," the Association said in a statement.
"... African Americans and in some cases other racial minority groups and women have been discriminated against simply because of their race, color of their skin and gender," the resolution stated.
"They had no choice in the matter, but those who choose the sinful homosexual lifestyle choose it in direct opposition to the Word of God."
The Kentucky Baptist Convention, the state's largest body of predominantly white Baptists, went on record last year against same-sex marriages.
The Association however could not reach agreement on the rule of women in the church.
It decided to delay a decision on whether to allow women to vote at meetings.
It also called for the establishment of faith-based organizations.
