SENATE BILL NO. 1281 WAS INTRODUCED JULY 30, 1998,

THE BILL IS "AN ACT PROHIBITING SAME-SEX MARRIAGE..."

1. MINUTES: Meeting of August 20, 1998 A meeting of the Task Force was held at the residence of Messrs. Campbell and Harrison at 7:30PM, with the following present:

Messrs. John C. Campbell and Richard J. Harrison, GayPASG
Charlie Lanigan, GAAMC and GayPASG Coordinator
Anne Volz
Kevin L. Tisdol, Metropolitan Community Church (MCC)
Messrs. Dee Gonzalez & Paul Porter, MCC
Bill Stella

The following were unable to attend because of conflicting schedules or vacation.

Sean Cashin, Central Unitarian Church of Paramus

2. Introductions:
Dee Gonzalez and Paul Porter
are active members of MCC with Dee serving on the Board. Dee announced that they were having a "Holy Union" on September 27th, 1998 and that all present were invited. The Rev. Arthur C. Runyan II of MCC will officiate. The service will be at St. Michael's Chapel, 40 Davidson Road, Piscataway.

Bill Stella is a member of LEAGUE (AT&T) and of NOW-NJ

3. Senate Bill No. 1281 Introduced July 30, 1998, this bill uses the same terminology as A2193, that is "Persons of the same-sex shall not marry" They both further state that such marriages performed elsewhere will not be recognized in NJ, and introduces a new section into the law which states that Marriage between persons of the same-sex is against the public policy of the State of New Jersey.

ACTION REQUIRED: We will need to change the letter and post card to the Governor to include S.1281, change the letter and card to Senator DiFrancesco from A.706 to S.1281, and make a new letter and card for Senator Wm. L. Gormley, Chair, Judiciary Committee, where the new Senate Bill has been assigned. We will also need to contact the groups holding cards and furnish them these changes.

4. Events Report: John and Rich reported on the following since our last meeting:

  1. Promises North, July 19th - briefed on SSM effort status.
  2. LEAGUE (AT&T) July 23rd, briefed on SSM status
  3. July 29th, Lunch with David Harris, Home News Tribune columnist, to introduce him to the mission of the Task Force.
  4. Promises South, meeting in Ewing Aug. 2.. Briefed and obtained authorizations for use of names of members who had not been at previous meetings.
  5. Aug. 16th, Promises North, briefed on SSM.

5. Future Events: The Task force will participate in the following:

  1. The Hyacinth AIDS Walk: Scheduled for Sept 27th?. We are asking for permission to have a table at the registration point. John & Rich will set up and find someone to cover as they are going to Paul & Dee's wedding.
  2. John & Rich will host LEAGUE on Aug. 28th and will again have the opportunity to brief them on the Task Force.
  3. Promises South is meeting Sept 6th and North on Sept. 20th.

6. Ed Martone reported that there had been nothing issued by the Domestic Partner working group and that he was still trying to schedule meetings with concerned legislators about Same-Sex Marriage..

7. THE NEXT TASK FORCE MEETING WILL BE OCT. 1st at 473 Plainfield Road in Edison. 732 744-1367
