A TASK FORCE TO DEFEAT A.2193 AND S.1376 was organized in January 1997. It was committed to defeating the Assembly and Senate bills, which would have denied legal recognition of civil same gender marriage. After a few months, we realized that our efforts would be essential on a continuing basis regardless of what happened to A. 2193 and S. 1376 so the name was changed to the
TASK FORCE FOR SAME-SEX MARRIAGE The Task Force is an alliance of individuals and organizations in New Jersey committed to civil same-sex marriage. We seek to achieve this goal through grassroots organizing, public education and political action. We were fortunate that the NJ legislation against same-sex marriage in 1997 was not scheduled for a vote. The Assembly Bill was reintroduced in the 1998 session as A. 706 and we are continuing our political action to let our Governor and legislators know that we feel that marriage is a basic human right and an individual personal choice and that the State should not interfere with same-gender couples who choose to marry and share fully and equally in the rights, responsibilities and commitment of civil marriage. If you desire to help, you can find letters linked to this Website for the Governor and concerned legislators or you can request post cards from GayPASG. You can also join the growing list of individuals and organizations signing statements of support and authorizing the use of their names in this effort.
A copy of Assembly Bill No. 706 may be obtained through the NJ Legislature link on this Website. This bill provides that marriage between persons of the same-sex is prohibited and void in New Jersey. The bill additionally provides that a marriage solemnized in another country, state or territory, if valid when solemnized, is valid here unless it is a marriage that would be prohibited and declared void in NJ by this legislation.
