Civil Union in Vermont

Vermont’s Civil Union law went into effect July 1, 2000.  This law permits eligible couples of the same sex to be joined in civil union.

VERMONT CIVIL UNION LICENSE

To Apply for a Civil Union LicenseOne of you must appear in person at the town clerk’s office to complete, sign and date your application.  You may apply for your license one (1) day before the ceremony.  Your license will be valid for sixty (60) days from the date of issue.

When applying for your Civil Union license you will need to provide your parents’ names and places of birth, and your mother’s maiden name, if divorced, a final divorce decree.  Blood tests are not required in the State of Vermont.

Civil Unions in Vermont can be performed by:  A member of the Clergy, a Judge (Supreme Court Justice, superior court judge, district judge, judge of probate, assistant judge), or a Justice of the Peace recognized by the State of Vermont can perform a ceremony.  A priest, rabbi or minister from another state may perform the ceremony in Vermont, if they fill for a permit from a Probate Court in the county where the Civil Union will be performed.

Fee:  There is a fee of $20.00 for your Civil Union license and a $7.00 fee for a certified copy.  Contact the town clerk’s office if you have any questions.

Fees for the officiants certifying the Civil Union vary, and you need to discuss this with them.  Justices of the Peace may be reluctant to ask for a specific amount, but compensation of $50.00 and above would be appropriate.

WE NEED YOUR HELP:

We desire to have a list of couples who intend to take advantage of a Vermont Civil Union added to this website and available to respond to media requests as soon as the decision is issued.  If you are going to go to Vermont to get a Civil Union, we would appreciate your contacting us.  We would like more of a bio later but at this point, we would appreciate names, addresses, phone numbers and websites if you have them in place.
