Dreyfuss Civics and
Civility Speech
MILLERSVILLE
UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA
Lyte Auditorium,
April 24, 2008
We had an appointment for me to have
an Entropin procedure done on my left eye on the 22nd and I told the doctor that
we had just learned that Richard Dreyfuss was going to be at Millersville
University in Pennsylvania the evening of the 24th and that we would like to be
able to attend. He stated that he would make an appointment to remove the
patch from the eye at 8:30 AM on the 24th and that he thought it would be OK for
us to attend the event.

Richard John Harrison,
Lancaster Airport
Fortunately it was a short flight
over to Lancaster and the weather was great so I can’t even complain about that. We picked up a rental car at the airport and drove over to Millersville.
The tickets for the MU banquet for the awards dinner for the Civic and Community
Engagement and Research Project (CCERP) were already sold out when we first
contacted the university. During the banquet, the school conferred ten awards
for distinguished civic leadership in the local, regional, national and
international arenas. The awardees were introduced before the Dreyfuss speech
and we are sorry that we were unable to attend the dinner. Following is a sample
of the awards:
Award for MU Student Leaders: “Silencing the Hate” to Ms. Claire Laidig and Mr.
Andrew Moyer. A student organization that is committed to creating an annual
event that raises awareness and respect of issues faced by gay, lesbian,
bisexual, and transgender and questioning students
Award for a National Leader: Mr. Don Eberly: Author of new release “The Rise of
Global Civil Society” social entrepreneur, advocate for civic engagement and
public service.
Award for a Non Profit Organization: Mom’s House of Lancaster. Providing free
childcare to over 160 families in the Lancaster area, they have helped numerous
single parents continue their education and enable them to support themselves
and their children.
We use the search engines on the Web for events relating to Civics and Civility. That is how we ended up at a one day Civics and Civility Summit at Kansas Sate
on the 2nd of November, 2008.

We were not lucky getting seats for the awards banquet but we were for the
Dreyfuss speech in that we were in the second row in front of the podium. Unfortunately we did not feel that the had the right to take a lot of pictures
so we were glad when we saw that the first one had turned out suitable.
