Trenton, New Jersey

Raquiba Hug         Bear Atwood

Bear Atwood, Special Assistant to the Director, introduced intern Raquiba Hug to the Commission. Raquiba is a recent college grad, planning to go to law school in the fall. Raquiba will be working with Bear to update the Division’s database and on other special projects.

Director Vespa-Papaleo provided copies of the Fall issue of Outlook, the Division publication; Noted that the Attorney Seminar, Making and Defending a Case of Discrimination: A Primer to Practicing Before the EEO & DCR has been re-scheduled for Jan. 29, ’04 and provided applications to signup. Current issues working in the Division were covered and all the above can be found on the website at www.njcivilrights.org.

On the way to the November 18th Commission meeting, I learned that the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court had ruled that Same-Sex Marriage was legal.  Today’s morning news reported that former Vice President Al Gore had endorsed Howard Dean. I suggested to the Commission that this kind of news was sure making it worth the trip to Trenton for the Commission meetings.  Shared two articles that are on our website with the Commission. The first about a Gay Mom who was shocked over her son’s punishment for telling another student that her mom was gay, and one about a judge ruling that a school violated a student’s civil rights by refusing to allow her to condemn gays because she could not “accept religious and sexual ideas or actions that are wrong.”
