Bigotry is the problem!

Our Families Deserve

The Full Benefits of Civil Marriage

A number of States have passed laws establishing Domestic Partner Benefits, and Vermont has established Civil Union that provides the same benefits for Vermont residents that Civil Marriage provides but it is only valid in the state of Vermont. In June Lambda, a Manhattan based gay rights organization, filed a lawsuit in New Jersey state court on behalf of seven same-sex couples that had been denied marriage licenses. David S. Buckel, the lead attorney on the case stated that the lawsuit seeks full equality so same-sex couples are treated no different than heterosexual couples. He further stated that Domestic Partnership and Civil Union are incredibly meaningful to our families but not having the choice to marry means we are still second-class citizens.

HARASSMENT AND BULLYING IN NEW JERSEY SCHOOLS

An amendment to the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination (LAD), signed in January 1992, included "Affectional or Sexual Orientation". The law clearly states that the Public Accommodations covered the entire school system from kindergarten through colleges and universities and any educational intuitions under the supervision of the regents of the state of New Jersey. However, the Education Department acknowledges that the requirements of the LAD have not been included in the "Equality in Educational Programs Code." The School System’s failure to implement the requirements of the LAD has resulted in the majority of the schools in NJ remaining unsafe for both students and teachers.

Bills processed in the Assembly and Senate in June 2002, require school districts to adopt harassment and bullying provisions policies to prevent violence in the schools, The new legislation was signed by the Governor on September 6, 2002. We solicit your help in seeing that there is full implementation. Visit the Safe Schools ACTION ALERT on our website.
